Fisheries complex planned for Semporna

TAWAU: The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority will be building a fisheries complex in Semporna, the first facility of its kind in Sabah.Its chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil said work to identify the site of the proposed project is ongoing to ensure that it will not become another white elephant.

“One factor that we’re emphasising is the depth of water because we want to ensure that fishing boats will be able to berth,” he said.
In a related matter, he said the agency is still in the process of gathering information on the status of its jetty at Tanjung Batu Keramat at Sg Ladalam, Logpond, which has been claimed to be unsuitable for fishermen to unload their catch.
He said there are technical aspects with regard to its present location that need to be looked into.
He, however, confirmed that the agency has no plan to hand over the jetty to another party but instead will look into all the issues to ensure that it can still be utilised.

He said that in the Peninsular whenever there are problems regarding jetties, the Drainage and Irrigation Department will take all necessary actions to ensure they remain usable.
He also took note on allegations that the jetty at Tanjung Batu Keramat have been abused by certain parties to carry out smuggling.
