Supporting urban farming
TAWAU: An eight-acre piece belonging to the Tawau Sports Complex has been put to good use under a Community Farming Adoption project pending the construction of a new soccer and rugby fields which could be replicated elsewhere in the State.

The sports complex manager Anuar John said the project, which commenced in 2016, is being implemented in a five-year phase, by which time it must give way to the construction of the new facilities.

He said there are eight participants involved in the project aged 42 to 78 years, all of whom are only allowed to plant cash crops on the land.

He said they have all understood the terms and conditions of the project, one of which is that they will have to cease planting once the land is to be used for the construction of the facilities.

For now, he said it serves the purpose as a way to help some people to earn their livelihood through farming.

He also said that by utilising the land for the project, it would help prevent encroachment as well as protect the structure of the land.

He further explained that the small group of adopted farmers are expected to set an example to the wider community to be financially independent.
