RM59m saved in Sandakan fires
SANDAKAN: Some RM59 million worth of personal items had been salvaged by the Sandakan Zone 6 Fire and Rescue Department, from January until March 14, this year.

Zone 6 Fire and Rescue Department chief Anddre Andrew said these items were salvaged from fire cases reported in Sandakan, Kinabatangan and Beluran areas.

At the same time, he said, it involved losses worth RM508,100.

“For emergency calls, we received 212 cases involving 107 fire and 105 rescue cases,” he said after an introduction ceremony of the new Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station chief Jimmy Lagung, here, Friday.

He added, for fire cases, no fatality was reported while rescue cases involved three deaths, 13 injuries and six rescued victims.

On bush fires during the current hot season, Anddre said, they received 61 emergency calls.

To this end, he advised the public to avoid from making an open fire during this season.

Meanwhile, he was upset as the department still received false reports, especially on far locations.

“To date, we have traced two false calls by teenagers.”

Earlier, Jimmy pledged to work in full dedication to face new challenges in his new posting and he welcomed a good rapport with the media on fire news reports in the district.

Jimmy had previously helmed Ranau Fire and Rescue Station and he replaced former Sandakan Fire and Rescue chief Mohd Razali Awang Ahmad who was transferred to Kota Kinabalu Zone Investigation Division.

Also present were Beluran Fire and Rescue Station chief Rastam Keladi and Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Station chief Nurul Azlan Jamalludin.
