New system to tackle long power disruption
LABUAN: Frequent and long periods of power disruption is currently being tackled with the implementation of the Distribution Automation (DA) system project which has commenced beginning 2016.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) acting managing director Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said the DA project is one of the proactive initiatives of SESB in ensuring a more reliable electricity supply in Sabah and Labuan.

“Through this project, SESB will be able to increase reliability, supply efficiency, minimize supply disruption, increase customer satisfaction as well as enhance operational safety.

“In addition, this project will also be the platform for the smart grid technology implementation,” he said after visiting the Sub-Station at Jumidar Buyong here on Saturday.

Nasser revealed that SESB has identified several critical areas in Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Kota Marudu and Labuan which have already been installed with the DA system.

“These areas are the pioneering “DA” systems which we have identified to often go through disruptions in electricity supply with a relatively long lasting supply recovery period,” he said.

He also shared that SESB has allocated approximately RM12.5 million for this project which has been implemented in two phases.

“The first phase involves 32 units of DA installations such as the Earth Fault Indicator (EFI) SCADA Ready, Line Fault Indicator (LFI) SCADA Ready and Auto Recloser (AR) SCADA Ready, in Kota Marudu, Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan.

“The second phase involves the installation of 247 units of DA assemblies consisting of the RMU SCADA Ready, VCB SCADA Ready, LFI SCADA Ready, EFI SCADA Ready & AR SCADA Ready, in Tawau, Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan, Kota Marudu and Labuan, which are expected to be completed in April 2019,” he explained.

Meanwhile, for Labuan, eleven DA installations have been installed in several strategic locations, he added.

The implementation of this DA enables the electricity supply system to be operated directly from the ‘Distribution Control Center’ (DCC) in Kota Kinabalu and every time there is an electrical disturbance, the DCC is able to immediately restore supplies to the affected area while damages repair work is in progress.

“With this system, our standby team will take a shorter time to find the cause of the disruption and the recovery period will be quicker for the convenience of our customers,” he added.
