Sabah in need of more synthetic hockey pitches

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Hockey Association (SHA) are hoping more synthetic hockey pitches will be built here to enable them to organise international events in the near future.
SHA president Dato Sri (Dr) Anil Jeet Singh (pic) said this after the closing of the Azhar bin Datuk Matussin Cup nine-a-side Open hockey tournament here on Sunday.

“We are hoping the government will come to our aid to have more synthetic pitches built around the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex area because we have plans to stage international events in the future.
“At the moment we only have the present venue suitable to host such an event, so it is difficult for us to carry out our plan.
“We need at least two extra pitches not only to stage international tournaments to help promote sports tourism but I believe the extra fields will also help to develop the sport with more venues for the players to train and play.
“I think we need about RM1 million for the additional field, and another RM200,000 to make some minor upgrading works to the current pitch,” he said.

He also said SHA must take advantage of the available direct flights from Kota Kinabalu to other international destinations.
“With the number of available direct flights from Kota Kinabalu, it has opened the door for us to organise international tournaments to attract foreign participation.
