Shopowners deal with sewerage by themselves
Ratepayers in Grace Square, Sembulan, have to fork out their own money to service their respective sewerage should there be a problem in using their toilets or facing overflowing manhole behind their respective shops.

A City Hall spokesman, when contacted recently, said even though the shopowners there had been paying their assessment rate to its office the services rendered to them were not inclusive of sewerage maintenance. “Maintaining their sewerage is not under our scope of work as for now,” he added.

He however said the latter could call their office to get advice on how to solve such matter.

“We may not be able to deploy our contractor to fix the problem but we can always tell them how to go about dealing with it,” he said.

A spokeswoman from the management company for the adjacent Grace Ville, Grace Court and Grace Garden, said Grace Square and Grace Point are not under their care.

“But we will gladly assist to help if their shop’s manholes are clogged and overflowing as a result of problem in the sewage treatment plant.

“We will go all out to overcome the problem because the treatment plant is still being managed by our company,” she added.

She reiterated that individual manholes for the shoplots in Grace Square are outside their jurisdiction to maintain.

“Ironically while sewerage in that commercial centre is outside the City Hall’s work scope but they charge parking to motorists who park their car there and even issue compound to whoever parked outside the parking lots.

“The big question now is how come sewerage is not listed in their list of services?,” she asked, adding that it would write a letter to the City Hall about the matter soon.

ALAN, a shop owner in Grace Square, said he was confused as to why the ratepayers had to deal with the sewerage by themselves.

“Is this the only area in the city that doesn’t receive maintenance for their sewerage?” he asked.

He hoped City Hall would consider taking up such task for the benefit of many shop owners including their customers as well.
