The Sabah Sports Board recently improved the surroundings of the Botanical Park, at Mile 2, Jalan Tuaran.
A concerned member of the public who went past the park while heading to the adjacent Wisma Wanita, recently, was surprised that many of the tall trees in that compound were lying flat on the grassy ground.

The latter questioned why the caretaker of the public park left the situation unattended to for so long considering the maintenance work could be done during the present dry season.
She also noticed the unkempt surrounding of the playground with grass reaching more than knee high.
A spokesman for the Board, which owned the piece of land in question, apologised to users for the delay in removing the trees and trimming the grass in that compound.
“We just completed what was needed to be done in that place on March 19,” he told Hotline on March 20.

He said strong winds that lashed many parts of the west coast areas in January uprooted some of the trees in the park.
“We will make it a point to trim the grass and repair several basic amenities such as streetlights at the car parks regularly,” he added.

“I thought the place is supposed to display various species of trees and flowers, hence, the name Botanical Park but it has not been given due maintenance and care, causing it to be overgrown with bushes and uncut grass,” said CATHERINE, the complainant.
She said the park looked untidy and there were burnt marks at several parts of the grassy ground, suggesting that someone had lit fires in the area.

“The area deserves to be beautified so that people could go there to relax in the afternoon.
“I also think this place is ideal for city dwellers to exercise because of its location which is just outside the city. It is a shame to let the park go wasted,” she said.
