Malaysians contribute RM174,000 to victims
SEPANG: Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa will present a contribution from Malaysians totalling RM174,000 for the victims and the two mosques in New Zealand affected in the mass shooting tragedy last week.

Speaking to reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) before flying out to New Zealand today, he said the contributions were from agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department and a media group.

He added he was asked to go to New Zealand to represent the Malaysian government after Malaysian Muhammad Haziq Mohd Tarmizi, 17, was confirmed among the 50 victims killed in the shooting tragedy in Christchurch last Friday.

While in New Zealand, he said he would be visiting the family of the deceased and other Malaysian victims.

“I will also deal with matters involving the Malaysian government as well as paying a visit to the two mosques affected in the incident,” he said.

Asked about the long time taken to confirm that Muhammad Haziq was killed, Mujahid said the identification was performed through the Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) test.

Mujahid also urged all mosques nationwide to perform ‘solat jenazah ghaib’ (funeral prayers while the body of the deceased is absent) after Friday prayers tomorrow.

The Foreign Ministry today confirmed Muhammad Haziq, 17, was among the 50 victims killed in the mass shooting tragedy in Christchurch, last Friday.

The media reports said his remains were laid to rest in New Zealand at noon Malaysia time Thursday.

His father, Mohd Tarmizi Shuib was injured in the attack. Two other Malaysians, Muhammad Nazril Hisham Omar and Rahimi Ahmad were also injured.

Meanwhile, The “Perhimpunan Solidariti Kedamaian” in the Federal capital this Saturday is a gathering of Malaysians based on the concept of peace and harmony irrespective of religious backgrounds or political ideologies, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa.

As such, he reminded participants to be dressed in white and not display logos of any political parties.

Using the symbol of a white dove with a hibiscus backdrop, the rally will start in front of the Sogo shopping complex here at 7am and make its way to Dataran Merdeka.

Speaking to Bernama and Radio Televisyen Malaysia in a special interview at Parliament House Thursday, Mujahid said that he had extended invitations to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Cabinet members and opposition leaders to attend it.

The gathering is organised to show solidarity among Malaysians and deplore the shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand last Friday by a white supremacist which left 50 Muslims dead. – Bernama
