Sabah futsal teams take third spot
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah men and women teams came third at the Maksak Malaysia Futsal Championship held at Sport City Indahpura, Kulai, Johor last weekend.

The men’s team was beaten by Kuala Lumpur 4-2 in the semi-final while the women was denied a place in the final after they lost to Kuala Lumpur 3-2 in the final minute of the match.

With the losses, the men finished in joint third place with Kedah and the women team shared third spot with Police.

Earlier in the quarterfinals, the men edged Sarawak 3-2 on penalty shoot-outs and their women teammates thrashed Armed Forces 7-1.

Sabah’s Usliza Usman also won the golden boot award with 10 goals in the women category.

The Sabah contingent was led by team managers Abdul Mukti Muchlish (men) and Mary Elizabeth Popong (women) while the coaches were Safar Muhammad (men) and Petronella Douny (women).

The tournament also marked the end of the season for most of the State futsal players as Sabah will not be taking part in the Malaysia Professional Futsal League and also the Tun Sharifah Rodziah (TSR) Women Football Tournament in April due to budget constraints.

Many of the women football players will most likely to feature for Melaka, Perak and Kedah in the TSR meets.
