Sabah karatekas emerge runners-up

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) finished second overall in the 39th Makaf National Senior Karate Open Championship 2019 which concluded at Stadium MPSJ, Serdang Jaya, Selangor on Sunday.
They managed to achieve their three-gold target and with another three silvers and six bronzes won, they improved their third place finish from last year and only lost the top spot to the country’s karate powerhouse Penang by two golds.

The gold medal winners were Pressy Misty Philip (women’s Kumite -68kg), Audrey Japyus (women’s Kumite +68kg) and Richal Mattan (men’s Kumite -55kg).
The silvers came from Roney Roger Sining (Kumite -84kg), Shyakira Zakaria (kumite -61kg) and the female team kumite while the bronzes were delivered by male team kata, Carl Pearson (Kumite -67kg), Vellcarollyne Augustine (individual kata), Ellen Rachel Samuel (Kumite -68kg), male team kumite, and Amirah Syahirah Azlan (Kumite -61kg).
SKA president Datuk Jake Jikulin Nointin, who had earlier called on the State athletes to use the championship as a stepping stone to represent the country in the sport was present to give his support to the team.

“It was very competitive for our athletes against some of the top karatekas in the country and I am very pleased with the final results.

“I am happy for the athletes, especially those medal winners. All of them had tried their best and if they continued to work hard, I am sure they will achieve greater heights,” he said.
