50 taking part in boxing championship

KOTA KINABALU: A total of 50 boxers from five teams will be taking part in the Sandakan Zone Boxing Mohd Antang Cup Championship at the Sibuga Jaya Multi-Purpose Hall starting 1pm today (Monday).
The participating teams are Sandakan, Beluran, Kinabatangan, Tongod and Armed Forces. Nine categories (49kg, 52kg, 56kg, 60kg, 64kg, 69kg, 75kg, 81kg, and 91kg) will be staged in the two-day tournament organised by Sabah Boxing association with SBA deputy president Elpedio John Adriano as the organising chairman cum tournament director.

John said SBA president Datuk Orlando Harumal will be present at the tournament which will be officiated by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Frankie Poon at 2pm today, and he urged the public and boxing fans to come and give their support.
He also said Mohd Antang, who donated the trophy is the vice president of SBA and former national boxer who won a bronze medal in the 1977 SEA Games.

“Sandakan has in the past produced many good boxers apart from Antang such as Khamis Amat, Eddy Kalai, Paulus Fernandez, Mazlan James Salan, Hainol Ramli, Harun Ramli, Khairol Kalai, Effendy Kala, Ali Basah and Affendi Hamin,” he added.
Meanwhile, he also disclosed that SBA has a one-year development calendar to prepare for the Mayor Cup, President Cup, Malaysia Cup, Sabah Games and Sukma 2020.
