Russel sets new 200m national record
KUALA LUMPUR: Young sprinter Russel Alexander Nasir Taib (pic) ran a superb race to blitz the national 200m record at the Queensland Classic Track Championships in Brisbane, Australia, Saturday.

The 21-year-old University of Sunshine Coast student clocked 20.77 seconds to finish second in the race and erase the old mark of 20.90 set by national sprint ace Khairul Hafiz Jantan at the Malaysian Open in 2017.

Japan’s Kei Takase won in 20.75s while his compatriot Daisuke Miyamoto (20.87s) was third.

Malaysian Athletics Federation (MAF) president Datuk Karim Ibrahim said he was blown away by the Perak sprinter’s impressive performance.

He said MAF would present Russel with RM1,000 cash for his achievement, adding that the sprinter would also get RM20,000 as his two-year training allowance.

“We will strive to get sponsorship for him as he does not get any financial aid apart from the small contribution from the Perak government at the 2018 Sukma.

“We will try to include him in the programme for the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines as he has the potential to deliver a medal for the national contingent,” said Karim. – Bernama
