Advice to these self-employed drivers
SANDAKAN: Taxi, school bus and transit bus drivers who are self-employed are advised to consider the importance of the Self-Employed Work Disaster Scheme (SPS).

State Assistant Minister of Local Government and State Housing and Karamunting State Assemblyman, George Hiew Vui Zin, said that this is important since it was enforced beginning June 1, 2017 by the Social Security Organisation (Socso), among others, to provide protection to self employed individuals.

“Hence, it is important that they contribute for their convenience in the future. The government through Socso is also committed to helping the people,” he said shortly after opening the SPS Scheme Briefing at Sandakan Seafood Restaurant Hall, here on Thursday. Also present was Elopura Assemblyman  Calvin Chong.

The first briefing was held by Socso in collaboration with the Sandakan Branch Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (LPKP) and attended by 350 attendees.

The scheme provides security protection to ll drivers who have been registered from a disaster by providing protection benefits.

Among other things, Medical Benefits (such as free treatment at the Socso Panel clinic), Temporary Disability Benefits (payments  based on sick leave by doctors), Permanent Disablement Benefits (interest payments based on percentage of permanent disability determined by a panel of doctors), Allowance  Services (given RM500 per month), Benefits of a Dependent (monthly payment to eligible beneficiaries) Benefits of decease payment  (given once a sum of RM2000), Recovery Benefits (such as rehabilitation of physiotherapy, false limbs, wheelchairs) and Education Loan Benefits (to children of periodic beneficiaries).

Regarding the programme, George and Calvin said it was the best approach in communicating information and raising awareness to all people of the importance of security protection during their respective job assignments.

Socso Office statistics shows that currently there are 72 taxi, bus drivers and e-hailing services registered with SPS, while SPS registration statistics throughout Malaysia until March 25 recorded a total of 13,512 drivers registered.

These include 6,610 bus, rental car (1,725) e-hailing (4,740) and bus drivers (437).

For case claims, it involved 70 cases of accidents during travel, nine workplace accidents and two cases of invalid claims.

At the same time, George presented a check for the first month of RM2,620 payments  to 300 taxi drivers, stop bus drivers and school bus drivers in Sandakan.
