Chance missed to teach Murut in schools: OKK
TENOM: Kemabong District Chief, OKK Panguot Lambang, said the Murut Language would have been taught in schools up to the university-level, like the Kadazandusun Language, if only the community could agree on which dialect Timugon or the Tahol (Tagol) – should be used.

“There was a time we in the Headmasters Council (MGGB) discussed with the then Education Director who came here and asked for MGGB’s agreement on teaching Murut Language in schools. We answered yes, that we fully support it.

“We wanted to plan accordingly but some among us Muruts disagreed. If we had an understanding and agreement then I believe our language would now be taught in schools just like the Kadazan Dusun Language,” he said.

The identity of the Murut community must be protected, he said when officiating the Pusaka Sabah Association’s 3rd biennial general meeting (2017-2019) at Perkasa Hotel, on Friday.

Lambang, who is a retired headmaster and member of the (MGGB) said similarly there were also differences in views in making the Murut dictionary.

“In the planning stage many agreed that the dictionary is to be written based on Timugon Murut dialect some wanted it to be in Tahol Murut because they said the majority of the Murut speak this dialect.

“But half of them agreed to the use of Timugon Murut dialect in the dictionary, as the first phase, considering the linguists who are doing it had fully mastered this dialect and can assist in the process of making the dictionary.”

Earlier, Pusaka Sabah Chairperson Sinawat Antakah @ Welly PH said their success in encouraging their children to get the best scores in STPM,SPM, PT3 and UPSR were impressive, adding three of their excellent achiever children have graduated at tertiary level while another six completed Diploma-level.

Lambang also presented several awards to the association members’ schooling children who excel in school.
