LABUAN: At least two mosques and two suraus on the island are to be upgraded, Labuan MP Datuk Rozman Isli said Friday.

He said the proposed places of worship, under the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), are Masjid An Nur here; Masjid Sirajul Islam in Tanjung Aru; Surau Baitul Makmur in Durian Tunjong and Surau Ikhlasiah in Kampung Belukut.

Rozman told Bernama he obtained the information from a reply to his question from Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof in the Dewan Rakyat on April 9.

The MP said work on the projects is expected to commence at the end of June and to be completed in 18 to 24 months.

He also said that three more proposed projects, namely the Masjid Ar-Rahman in Sg Lada; Masjid Nur Iman in Kg Ganggarak and Surau Nurul Islam in the town, which come under the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI), have yet to be implemented.

“I was told the JAWI-MAIWP coordination meeting in June 2018 decided that all the new projects for which there is yet to be a commitment had to be deferred and efforts are in the pipeline to find a solution.

“The Masjidul Iman, Sg Bedaun, project has been re-tendered and a contractor has been appointed to implement it by Jan 12, 2021,” he said. – Bernama
