Chua, Chong bag maiden Sabah Amateur Open titles

KOTA KINABALU: Chua Poh Guan and Charlayne Chong won their maiden Sabah Amateur Open titles at the Sabah Golf and Country Club on Sunday.
Seasoned golfer Chua, who won the KGC Open title in February continued his fine form to take the 35th edition of the Open title by beating youngster Christopher James Joseph on the first hole playoff after both players returned with the identical 226 three-day total.

Chuah also won the prize for carding the best gross score with his two-over 74 achieved on the opening round of the competition.
In third place and four shots behind was Jordan Mobijohn on count back victory over Brandai Lai.
Charlayne on the other hand, with her three-day score of 230 had a two-shot win over fellow Malaysia Golf Association (MGA) teammate Vinisha Gunaseelan while in third place and another two shots behind was Nurul Syahirah Afiqah with 234.
In the nett event, the men’s title went to Andi Adam Bacok (142) followed by Ng Loong Fah (145 ocb) and Ampuan Ikram Zainuddin (145) while the ladies winners were Irsalina Akmadin (134), Valerie Langkap (146 ocb) and Chiew I Youn (146).

Meanwhile, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Frankie Poon in his speech at the closing ceremony praised Sabah Golf Association (SGA) for their part in developing the sport in the State.

He hopes SGA will continue to recruit more youngsters to take up the sport and build up the pool of talents to be groomed into world class golfers.

He added that his Ministry will continue their efforts in supporting the development of golf and urged all golf clubs in the State to play an active role in the talents identification programme. – GL Oh
