City Hall forced to remove water tank

KOTA KINABALU: City Hall was forced to resort to harsh action of removing a water tank on top of a cantilever slab in Block J, Sinsuran commercial centre, after the tenant concerned ignored its earlier notices, in March.

A notice of intent to shift away the water tank concerned was issued to the unit owner by City Hall in November last year but the advice fell on deaf ears.

A concerned member of the public had voiced her fear on the integrity of the concrete structure in question due to the weight of the water tank.

Several buildings in the city such as those in Jalan Pantai, Jalan Gaya, Bandaran Berjaya, Segama and Sinsuran have been standing for more than 40 years.

These structure were constructed with concrete mixture of aggregates, including sea sand, which contains a high level of chloride that is believed to be among contributing factor in hastening the rusting process of the reinforcements in the slabs.

A City Hal spokeswoman said it hoped other tenants in that part of the city would not accommodate such large tank on their concrete ledge due to its heavy weight when it’s full of water.

“Our officers will be keeping an eye on such goings-on not only in Sinsuran but other commercial centres in the city as well,” she added.

He advised the public to report at 088-210011, should they spotted such problem in the city.

“I filed a compliant to the City Hall about the matter because it posed a danger to pedestrians and nearby parked cars,” said Stephanie, the complaint.

In view of the recent case involving a collapsed cantilever slab in Kampung Air commercial centre, she hoped the agency would step in to resolve the matter.

“I cannot imagine the severity of injury to a person who happened to be in the site when the structure collapses,” she said.

She said something must be done to prevent any heavy object from being placed on top of the cantilever slabs in this commercial centre.

“I sincerely hope the building owner will take heed of this matter and take the proactive step to relocate the water tank away from the ledge,” she said. (OV)
