Progress in education contributes to country’s devt
SANDAKAN: Youth and Sport Minister, Datuk Frankie Poon, said the progress achieved in education over five decades ago has contributed to the country’s development, improved lives of the people regardless of their races and strengthened unity.

“We are currently facing various new challenges which demand us to constantly explore for the latest approach, be innovative and strive to go beyond the border of excellence.

“The first challenge is to increase the quality and equity in education to ensure each citizen gets access to quality education without taking into account the location and region.

“Secondly, to celebrate diversity and strengthen unity among the people through national education system that prioritise on shared value, culture and ambition. Thirdly, to increase the nation’s competitiveness at the international arena in the increasingly intense global competition climate,” he said.

Poon, who is also Tanjung Papat Assemblyman, believe all these challenges can be overcome with the commitment and dedication of teachers in doing their job trustworthily and responsibly for the benefit of all.

Poon said this when officiating the Sandakan Parliamentary-level Teacher’s Day Celebration and Excellent Services Award Presentation held at SMJK Tiong Hua, here.

He also presented the Sandakan Tokoh Guru 2018 to former SK Sung Siew headmistress Datin Florence Chong Mee Fook, widow of late ex-Sandakan MP and Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister, Datuk Stephen Wong.

Chong, born in Tamparuli, started her career as a teacher at SMK Saint Mary from 1977-1998, before she became the Senior Administration Assistant at SK Saint Mary in Labuk (1998-2002) and promoted to a Supervisor at Sandakan District Education Office (2002-2006).

She retired as SK Sung Siew headmistress in Dec 2015, after serving there since 2006.

She had received various awards previously including the Sandakan District-level Excellent Headmaster Award in 2011, State-level Wira Harapan Serasi 2013-2014 and National-level Primary School Excellent Kokum Management Award (fifth place) 2013-2014.
