Melaka to use innovative trap to solve monkey nuisance
MELAKA: The Melaka state government will be using an innovative monkey cage improvised by the Terengganu State Farmers Organisation to overcome nuisance caused by wild monkeys especially in the rural areas near villages.

Melaka Chief Minister Adly Zahari said the cage trap would be placed at certain areas which have problems of wild monkeys as a pilot project before extending its use to all areas having the same problem.

He said the cage would be placed at state constituencies facing wild monkey menace such as Asahan, Gadek, Ayer Molek and Bukit Katil as a pilot project.

“The cage has been proven to be effective in arresting the wild monkey problem in several areas and we are cooperating with the Terengganu State Farmers Organisation to settle the problem.

“We see conventional methods such as killing wild monkeys by poisoning or shooting as not the best solutions,” he told reporters after opening a Community Games in Bukit Baru here.

Commenting further, he said the usage of cage is more relevant as it involved lesser funds for the cage which costs about RM1,000 each and it could hold up to 25 monkeys at one time and it can also be moved about to other places when needed.

He said so far, the government is obtaining feedback on how to deal with the trapped monkeys for a more effective solution.

Adly said the animals would not be released into the forest reserve in the state as some areas in the state, are near to housing areas.

Meanwhile, the Melaka PH chairman said the defeat of Pakatan Harapan in the Rantau by-election yesterday would not affect efforts to continue serving the people as pledged in the 14th general election.

“The most important thing is to focus on improving the economy of the people at state and national levels as promised earlier,” he said.

He said the victory of Umno deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan in Rantau was expected as it is a BN stronghold and the acting Umno president is the incumbent of the seat.

He said  a comprehensive post-mortem on the defeat would be conducted at central and state levels including the choice of candidates to represent PH.  –  Bernama
