Suhakam’s three main Sabah issues
Kota Kinabalu: Issues about documentation, citizenship and land are top on Suhakam Sabah’s list of complaints recorded within the first four months this year.

Its commissioner Datuk Godfrey Gregory Joitol (pic) said out of the total 292 complaints received so far, 152 of them were on documentation and citizenship whereas 32 were on land issues.

He said the commission has managed to resolve 12 cases concerning documentation and citizenship while some involving land are still awaiting feedback from the Land and Surveys Department.

He said the number of complaints is a lot for Suhakam to deal with as each year it can only resolve 30 per cent of the total received.

“Matters concerning documentation and citizenship fall under the jurisdiction of the federal government while land issues under the state,” he said after launching a mobile complaint service organised by the commission and Tuaran District Office in Kiulu.

The mobile counter provides 17 services including from the Land and Survey Department, Water Department, the Native Court, National Registration Department and the Sabah Rubber Industries Board.

The programmes main objective was to reach out to the people in rural areas who otherwise have difficulty to travel to the city.
