200 to take part in Borneo Sports symposium
KOTA KINABALU: Some 200 people are expected to take part in  the Borneo Sports Symposium -  “Grassroots to Elite Performance “ to be held at Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex on May 3 and at TH Hotel ,here from May 4-5.

The inaugural event is organised by Sabah Sports Board with cooperation from the Youth and Sports Ministry, Sabah Sports Council and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

Sabah Sports Board Chairman Dr KH Tan,  who is also  the organising chairman said in a press conference at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex on Wednesday that they are targeting MSN coaches, education department coach and teachers as well as students and the general public.

“The main objective of the symposium is to serve as a significant platform for sports officials, team managers. teaching staffs and coaches to share recent findings from diverse specialists with the public.

“To convey the vision and mission of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, to improve the quality of sports management and establish high performance coaches and also to share current trends in training and athlete development with coaches and sports organisations.”

There are a total of nine speakers at the symposium led by Professor John Cronin from Sports Performance Research Institute New Zealand, who will be giving workshop on strength and conditioning  assisted by Nathanael Tan, Amirul Zaini and Spancer Biondy Ramba.

“We are very lucky to get hold of Professor John because he is very busy, travelling around the world to give talks on strength and conditioning ,” said Tan.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William Butch Ramirez will also be present to talk on grassroots development.

The other speakers are Vice President of the Asean Federations of Sports Medicine and Malaysian Association of Sports Medicine Dr Chan Kin Yuen who is the leading expert on sports injury prevention, Dr Pathmanathan K Suppiah on skills acquisition, Chief Executive officer of Sarawak Corporation Dr Ong Kong Swee and also former national athlete and current advisor of  Sabah Master Athletics Association Aliudin Jumaat.

The three-day symposium fee is RM200 for the public , and US200 for international participants.
