LABUAN: It is time for the Labuan nucleus hospital to be upgraded to a major specialist hospital for the convenience of the local community and increased demand for public healthcare facilities, says activist Lau Seng Kiat.
He said there is no denying that the 1995-built hospital has seen tremendous improvement in services and equipment over the last few years.

“Still more needs to be done, considering that Labuan is an island without a private specialist hospital and those seeking advanced treatment have to travel out of the island which is costly and unaffordable by many,” he added.
Lau pointed out that Labuan is a financial centre as well as an oil/gas hub and a developing education hub, making it all the more justified to have a major hospital.
He said even though the present hospital is equipped with computerised CT scan services and more than 10 specialists providing expertise in various fields, “we have to move forward and the Health Ministry should seriously consider the Labuan proposal.”
He also said due to the increased demand for services, the hospital has grown small and often overcrowded.

“For instance, patients waiting at the hall for appointments have no eating space and the hall is shared by the paediatrics department.”

He urged the authorities to come up with a system that enables quick clearance of patients and thus ease overcrowding both in the premises and at the car park.
