Don’t be embarrassed using mother tongue in public: YB
KOTA BELUD: Tempasuk Assemblyman, Datuk Musbah Jamli, said members of ethnic community should not feel embarrassed when showcasing their cultural heritage like traditional costumes or conversing in their mother tongues in public.

To this, he praised the effort by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) SK Bangkahak Baru in the organising of the school-level Kadazandusun Carnival and Kaamatan Festival to encourage students to master their mother tongue, which is also in line the objectives of the national education.

Musbah said it is the right step and that this effort should be emulated by everyone especially parents and teachers and other associations.

“Indirectly, this initiative also supported the Government effort in providing various programmes as part of the national education development,” he said when officiating at the closing of the carnival.

Musbah said apart from that, the carnival can also strengthen existing relationships among the community members and create awareness among parents on the importance of education.

“If the mother tongue is lost, the race will also lose its identity…that is why it is important for a race to preserve their mother tongue,” he said adding it is a responsibility of parents to teach children their mother tongue from young age.

He said children nowadays not only need to do well in their studies but also to have values like discipline, responsibility, obedience to parents, honesty and love which are important in shaping their selves.

He said the people of Kota Belud should be proud because the district is not only rich in natural attractions but also cultural heritage which need to be preserved for future generation.

With cultural and racial diversities in this country, there should be a platform for people to know each other and reinforce the existing unity and understanding, he said.
