Use high quality padi seedlings

KOTA BELUD: The Department of Agricultural Affairs encourages farmers to use High Quality Rice Seedlings to cultivate rice paddy as well as increase family and economic income.

Assistant Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Sabah, Dr Daud Yusof said the production of High Quality Paddy Seed by the Department of Agriculture was able to assure farmers that the quality of paddy seedlings produced meets MS ISO 2001: 2015.

“The paddy industry is very important especially through the Paddy Agronomics Division, Agricultural Research Centre (ARC) where the yield of the seed varieties such as TR8 and TR9 is capable of producing paddy up to seven tonnes per hectare if followed by orderly guidelines”.

“As a result, with fast maturing conditions it can be planted three times a year as well as drought resistant, saline condition resistant and resistant to various pests.”

Daud said farmer’s awareness on the use of high quality Paddy Seed was still low especially in Kota Belud, Tenom and Papar districts.

“As a result, paddy seed production in the Department of Agriculture through rice seedling processing plant is low at around 25 to 30 per cent per annum compared to Sabah’s paddy seed requirement of 3,000 to 3,200 tonnes a year if farmers use 100 kilogrammes per hectare.

“In this regard, the District Agriculture Department and as Chairman of the District Agricultural Development Committee (JPPD) should involve all parties to encourage farmers to use the High Quality Paddy Seed,” he said.

At the event, a total of 18 farmers participating in the Seed Production Scheme received the Certificate and High Quality Paddy Assistance.
