Go from producing to processing, urges MP
RANAU: It is time for local sellers to move away from just selling fruits and vegetables and go into industrial business which involve processing and producing raw goods into end product.

Ranau MP, Jonathan Yasin, said this could be a turning point for many local sellers because rather than being dependent on agriculture produce they venture into processed products as it could yield in more revenues for them.

“For instance, ever since we could remember, many small-time entrepreneurs were only involved in selling vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes and durians. Well, why not move forward from that into producing products like durian-flavoured chocolate bars?

“Processed goods can bring higher returns. Just think about the opportunities one could have by marketing a product. If your products are good, the sky is the limit. You can even market your goods globally,” he said.

Jonathan, who is also Malaysian Cocoa Board Chairman, said this when officiating at the closing of the Agro Based Industry Development Course that was held at the Mini Dewan Kg Sinarut Baru.

The event, which was jointly organised by the Ranau Agricultural Department and the Sabah Women’s Affairs Department, saw some 30 villagers comprising housewives, single parents and unemployed individuals taking part.

He commended the organisers for organising the course and urge similar course is held in every villages in Ranau so that the villagers, especially housewives and single parents, could acquire a way for better lives.

“From the products that were generated through the course by the participants, I am impressed to see that most of them are of similar quality with the goods we usually find in supermarkets. It is ready to be marketed right away.

“Congratulation to all who were involved in making this a successful and highly-impact programme which has given a lot of benefit to the villagers here. To the participants, I hope this doesn’t stop here but a starting point for all of you,” he said.
