Foster family way to learn about Christianity, Islam
TENOM: Programmes involving non-Muslim foster families helps to further strengthen understanding among the multi-religious community in the State especially programmes organised by the Institut Pengajian Islam dan Dakwah Sabah (Ipdas).

According to Kemabong Assemblyman, Jamawi Jaafar, the programme is good as it not only involves the Muslim community but also the non-Muslim community and the children get to know both faiths better for mutual understanding. He said such effort will further boost understanding, tolerance and unity among the various religions and communities in Sabah.

“We do not want what happened in some countries where there is no mutual understanding and tolerance between religions leading to bloodshed happen in our State.

“We hope the people in Sabah especially in Kemabong will continue to be tolerant, understanding and united. From my side, I will continue to support and help the people of Kemabong regardless of their race and religion,” he said when officiating at the Jalinan Mahabbah Anak Malaysia Programme organised by IPDAS and the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) at Kampung Kepulu, here, recently.

He said a total of 36 IPDAS students participated in the four-day and three-night programme involving 10 foster families in the village.

He said out of the 10 foster families, four are non-Muslim families who willingly accepted the students as their foster children for the duration of the programme.

Meanwhile, the families and students that were involved in the programme expressed their excitement for the opportunity to strengthen friendship among them.

For Ansarap Korong, 54, the head of a non-Muslim family, the purpose of their participation is to learn about Islam in order to support unity among the various religions that would benefit their families in future.

As for Ipdas student, Dzul Nizar Kamsiran, 24, he learned and experienced many things during his stay in the village adding that he had the opportunity to practice what he learned in classroom.

Another Ipdas student, Norfazilah Sidek, 23, said the programme left her with many sweet memories of her foster family and hoped that their relationship will continue.

The programme is a mandatory requirement for every fourth year student of Ipdas before they graduate. It not only aimed to produce leaders to be strong in their faith but also knowledgeable and capable of becoming guides and references based on Muslim teachings.

Also present were Ipdas Director, Mohamad Zamri Mohamad Shapik, and Kemabong Assistant District Officer, Djamiludin Kamarudin.
