PBRS latest to accuse State Govt
KENINGAU: Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) became the latest after Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM), Star, PBS, SAPP, PCS and indigenous-based NGOs to accuse the Parti Warisan led State Government of giving tacit and subtle support to illegal immigrants in Sabah.

Its President Tan Sri Joseph Kurup alleged public suspicion has been raised in many instances about how the present government is handling the issue.

“There appears to be tacit and subtle encouragement from the present Warisan Government,” he said, citing a piece of land in Manggatal that was said to be given to undocumented people as their settlement.

Kurup said other plans by the government have also caused Sabahans to be worried such as its plan to set up a relocation centre for conflict refugees on a remote island off Sabah.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal had said if the refugees were from Philippines then those attempting to enter the state would be placed in an island located at the border between the two countries.

“There was also an open call by Warisan leaders for people whose origins were from the neighbouring Philippine island Sulu to be declared as natives.

“Just a couple of weeks ago, a Warisan leader openly supported the Chief Minister to legalise stateless people. If they are stateless people they must be of illegal immigrants’ off-springs,” said Kurup.

He also claimed that because of “the tacit and subtle support” from Warisan leaders, illegal immigrants have been dominating spaces in local markets at the expense of locals.

He regretted that the Federal Government has not taken concrete actions to resolve the illegal immigrant problem in Sabah in spite of repeated pleas from the people.

“Many memoranda had been sent by the people of Sabah including the (recommendations) of the Royal Commission of Inquiry on illegal immigrants in Sabah. Again no action was taken.”

On the Sandakan Parliamentary by-election, Kurup accused the Federal leaders of trying to hoodwink voters to vote for the DAP by promising that the Federal government will act on the RCI recommendations.

“On the RCI, I’d advise voters in Sandakan and the people of Sabah to take it with a pinch of salt. I have said in uncertain terms before that the Federal authorities are not serious in resolve this teething problem.
