5,000 packets of smuggled fags seized in Lahad Datu

LAHAD DATU: Some 5,000 packets of smuggled cigarettes were seized by the marine police here during “Ops Landai” at the coastal areas of Kampung Kenali, Felda Sahabat 16, Friday night.
Sabah Marine Police (Region 4) Commander ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali said the cigarettes were seized from a speedboat at about 10pm.

He said following information, an operation was launched in the area by a team who spotted a boat with a male boat skipper acting in a suspicious manner.
“The team approached the boat and introduced themselves as police. The suspect immediately jumped off the boat and escaped to nearby bushes.
“The suspect is yet to be detained and further inspection on the speedboat found several black plastic packs containing the cigarettes,” he said.

Mohamad Pajeri said the seizure, including the boat and its engine, were worth RM55,200. These were brought to the Lahad Datu Marine Police Force Operations Centre for further investigation under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967.

The seized items were handed over to the Customs Department Lahad Datu branch.
