TUARAN: Some 60,000 chickens perished when three blocks at the Chicken Breeding Center of Eng Peng Group in Kampung Bantayan Tamparuli were razed.

The 5.10am fire  was detected by a group of workers staying nearby and preparing for ‘sahur’ (eating before sunrise) who contacted the firemen.

A worker, Rosnah Jimmy, 34, said they then alerted other workers and nearby residents.

“Each block covering 60 meters and having 20,000 chickens, were destroyed, “ he said.

Rosnah said the fire brigade saved several other buildings that had three blocks of chicken cages each.

Tuaran District Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Head (BBP), Abdul Qawie Abdul Gapar said they received a distressed call at about 5.23am and deployed two fire engines with 10 personnel each to the scene.

Abdul Qawie said upon arrival, they found 80 per cent of the semi-permanent structures destroyed and prevented the fire from spreading.

They managed to bring the fire under control by 7.26am. The cause and estimated losses are still under investigation.
