Special needs young adult helps with Baju Raya sewing

RAUB: Would you allow a special needs person sew your baju kurung or kebaya? If the answer is yes, then Mohd Ridzuan Zakaria, 21, from PDK Gembira (a community-based rehabilitation centre), is the person to look for.

Mohd Ridzuan, who suffers from learning difficulties and started his job as assistant tailor this Ramadan, told Bernama Tuesday: “I am so happy to help. This is an important task.”

PDK Gembira’s supervisor, Rosfaizah Saleh Kamal, 40, said they started taking orders for raya clothes from last April after her daughter Nurul Amirah Mohd Fuzi, 21, finished her fashion course in a community college.

Rosfaizah said her daughter decided to sew clothes at the centre because she knows the students personally and was confident they were teachable.

The clothes are priced between RM30 and RM70, with Mohd Ridzuan paid accordingly for his help.

“I must confess that when we posted on Facebook and WhatsApp about this service, I was worried no one would be interested (in ordering), but Alhamdulillah, we’ve received 17 orders so far.

“At the beginning, it was a very challenging task because we even had to teach the students how to thread a needle. Of all of them, only Mohd Ridzuan has the right skills,” she said. – Bernama
