Enough supply of essential items for festivities
KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPHDNHEP) assured that there is sufficient supply of essential items, including petrol, diesel and cooking gas, for the coming Pesta Kaamatan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.

Its Sabah Director Georgie Abas gave the assurance after inspecting three wholesale and repackaging companies for cooking oil in the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park, here, Thursday.

“There is no need for people to worry or go on a panic-buying spree,” he said.

For the record, Sabah currently has supplies of 1,066,754kg of sugar, 780,217kg of flour, 547,508kg of packet cooking oil, 652,353kg of bottled cooking oil, 21,574,461 litres of petrol, 26,633,764 litres of diesel and 669,886kg of liquefied petroleum gas.

Georgie also reminded the public to inform the Ministry should they come across cooking oil packets priced above RM2.50 each as it is a controlled item.

He also said the Ministry’s enforcement team led by Sabah Deputy Director (Chief Enforcement Officer), Ravichandran Vadivellu, will conduct daily inspection on prices of goods, particularly at Ramadan bazaars, retail shops, markets and supermarkets.

“There are 88 Ramadan bazaars across Sabah and consumers can be rest assured our enforcement personnel will be on the ground from 3pm onwards, even on public holidays, to ensure there is sufficient supply and prices are reasonable.

“For 2019 till now, we have inspected a total of 16,604 business premises throughout Sabah and recorded a total of 743 cases, with an overall seizure amounting to RM2,153,492.60,” he added.

A total of 436 cases were compounded, with the compounds collected amounting to RM138,300.

As for cases brought to court, the Ministry recorded 17 and also issued fines amounting to RM65,000.

On complaints, Georgie said the Ministry received 475 so far this year.

“Throughout last year, a total of 6,918 business premises across Sabah were inspected with a total of 1,127 cases recorded and seizures worth RM7, 523,098.

“The Ministry also solved 881 cases with compounds amounting to RM394,753, while 97 cases were brought to court and RM99,800 worth of fines collected.
