Mammogram for Tawau hospital
TAWAU: State Assistant Minister Datuk Jimmy Wong said Minister of Finance, Lim Guan Eng has agreed, in principle to provide funds for a mammogram screening machine at Tawau general hospital this year.

Jimmy raised the matter with Lim and the Minister of Health Datuk Seri Dr. Dzulkefly Ahmad recently. They both agreed and supporting documents are being processed for submission.

Lim also requested the Sabah Health Ministry to write a letter and list out the items and quantity required by the hospitals, so that his Ministry could study and approve it in the short term.

The Tawau hospital is in urgent need of eight other medical equipment, namely a Computed Radiography (CR), one Defibrillator machine, one Elect convulsion Therapy Machine, one Tracheostomy set, one Choledocoscope, one Optical Coherence Tomography-Retina Scan Duo, one Echocardiography machine as well as one Arthroscopy Camera and Shaver system. 

Overall cost of the nine medical items including the mammogram screening machine, is about RM4 million. 

Jimmy said he would follow up with the Federal Government and ensure the mammogram screening machine is provided soon as possible.

According to Health Ministry statistics, breast cancer is the number one cancer killer of women in Malaysia while the Chinese community records the highest cases. 

It is said that one out of 16 Chinese women has the risk of having breast cancer.

The number of breast cancer cases has increased yearly and it affects women aged 20 up to 75. 

In 2011-2013, the health statistics has shown that the most afflicted age group is 60 to 64 and the Chinese community achieved the highest number of cases at 25pc, followed by Kadazan/Dusun (18pc), Bajau (10pc), Malay (5pc) and Murut (1pc).
