Man, brother held for smuggling fags

LAHAD DATU: A 26-year-old man and his 10-year-old brother were detained by the Marine Police Force here upon the discovery of 14,800 packets of smuggled cigarrettes inside their van at Simpang Tabin, Thursday.Sabah Region Four Marine Police Force Commander, ACP Mohamad Pajeri Ali said they managed to detect a van believed carrying illegal items at about 7.18am at the I-Peak area. They tailed the van and stopped it at Simpang Tabin area for inspection.ADVERTISEMENT
“In the van found 7,800 packets of Absolute brand cigarrettes, 5,500 packets of Astro Hitam and 1,500 packets of Astro Merah.
“Both suspects also failed to produce any valid identification document,” he said, adding that the cigarette are believed for the local market.
Mohamad Pajeri said the team seized the van, two mobile phones, a wallet and some notes and all the seizure were estimated worth RM97,420.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

He said that the suspects and the seizure were later brought to Marine Operation centre for further action.ADVERTISEMENT
“The case will be investigated under the Customs Act 1967,” he added.
