Four Sabahans make initial shortlist
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Para shuttlers may get the chance to represent the country in the Asean Para Games in Manila this year after four players made the initial list for selection following their impressive showing in the recent National Para series one Championship held at the Paralympics Sports Centre in  Kuala Lumpur.

They won two silvers and a bronze with the silver coming from Shah Rizan  Daud in the Men single SU-5 and the Men Doubles SU-5 by Shah Rizan and Rahim Tinggal, who also won the bronze in the Men single SL-3.

Shah Rizan lost his singles final to national player Amyrul Yazid in straight sets 15-21, 20-22 while the doubles final saw him and Rahim putting up a good fight before losing 18-21, 21-16, 16-21 to their Kuala Lumpur opponents.

Rahim in the  singles, was eliminated in the semifinals by top seeded Muhammad Huzairi 8-21, 17-21.

Coach  Awang Hazierul Ag. Daud reckoned the players have improved considerably despite failing to win any gold in the competition.

“We showed some progress by reaching the finals even though we failed in the final hurdle, but it was still a success considering that all four of our players qualified for the selection trial at the series’ two competitions to be held in July,” he said.

The other two players who made the grade are 18-year-old Jerald Jaudy in SL3, and Mohd Asrun Mahadi, 24 in the same category.

Meanwhile, Sabah’s Para swimmer Brenda Annellia Larry who is bound for the World Para Championship in London this September also did well at the recent Singapore 2019 World Para Swimming World Series Infokit program at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.

According to her coach Eva Wong, the SMK Taman Tun Fuad student did some good personal times in the competition, and are all ready to compete in the 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke in London.

Sabah State Association of Sports and Recreation for the Disabled (Pestron) President Tan Wha Koon was delighted with the good showing by Sabah athletes in the national and international scene.

This followed the early statement by the association where Ramdi B. Rahimin and Charley Jikulis will represent Malaysia in the World Para Archery Championship + PG QT Para World Ranking to be held in Netherlands next month.
