Tambunan potential as tourist attraction centre
TAMBUNAN: Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony said Tambunan has potential to be developed as one of the tourist attraction centres in Sabah and Malaysia.

He said this is based on the current scenario where the district is blessed with rich natural resources, preserved forests, clean water sources, cool weather and far from the city bustle.

“The development of tourism here does not require the construction of skyscrapers but simply by developing or highlighting the richness and beauty of nature and existing resources which are not available in any other district in Sabah,” he said when opening the district-level Kaamatan Festival at Pisompuruan Square on Saturday.

Peter speech was read by Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development, Datuk Haji Muis Haji Picho.

Peter said, apart from that, the district is also well known for its agriculture where it alone can attract tourism through farming tourism or agrotourism which is increasingly becoming a trend at present especially among tour operators throughout Sabah.

“I am all for the development of agrotourism because this sector has proven to be able to generate lucrative income not only to tour operators but also to the villagers.

“Various government agencies, especially the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment or the Sabah Tourism Board, are ready to provide assistance from various aspects if needed particularly where advice is concerned,” he said.

He congratulated Tambunan for taking the step in developing the Tambunan tourism sector by organising the Visit Tambunan Year 2017 where during that year various activities and programmes involving culture, customs and sports, among others were held and attracted tourists from both domestic and abroad to the district area.

According to him, the influx or arrival of the visitors is a good indicator for more visitors to the district in future.

Peter said in conjunction with the Kaamatan Festival unity among the people in Sabah is still intact to this day despite the diverse races, religions and cultures because they still practice unity, tolerance, peace and respect for each other.

To this, he called on the people to defend this harmony because through this practice that they are able to grow in various aspects including ensuring traditional cultures continue to be preserved.

Peter said the Kaamatan Festival is the best foundation for the community to expose and highlight the richness of its arts and culture.

He said cultural heritage should be safeguarded as it is a legacy that reflects the ethnicity.

“Losing the heritage mean losing the identity of the race,” he said

He urged the people in the state to attend the state-level Kaamatan Festival which will in Hongkod Koisaan, Penampang on May 30 and 31.

He said there are various programmes during the event such as Unduk Ngadau and Sugandoi.

Also present at the event were District Officer Jumain Abdul Ghani, Keningau District Police Chief DSP Shahrudin Mat Husain, KDM Malaysia Vice President Justin Alip, Tambunan Community Development Leader Basal Datuk Bullah, Keningau Divisional Parti Warisan Sabah Chief Datuk Jake Nointin and District Chief OKK Adin Manggala.
