BELURAN: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) here foiled an attempt to smuggle 84,500 cartons of contraband cigarettes worth RM455,000 when five local men were arrested at a roadblock in Sapi Nangoh on Sunday afternoon.

Esscom Commander DCP Dato’ Hazani Ghazali said all local suspects who drove five different Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) were heading to Sandakan from Kota Kinabalu when detained around 5.45pm at the checkpoint.

“The value of all confiscated contraband cigarettes with the estimated custom taxes amount to RM650,000,” he said.

“Acting on public tip-off, an Esscom detained five suspicious SUVs driven by men aged 18 to 46 coming from Kota Kinabalu direction.

“All suspects who were ordered to disembark from their vehicles for inspection admitted the contraband cigarettes were brought from Kota Kinabalu,” he said in a statement to media, Monday.

The confiscated contraband cigarettes comprised 45,800 packets of red Astro, 22, 880 packets of Green Astro, 1,850 packets of black Astro, 1,200 packets of Extreme, 4,500 packets of blue Era, 3,600 packets of Absulete (kretek), 2 670 packets of Apache and 2,000 packets of black Era.

Hazani believes all contraband cigarettes were smuggled in from Indonesia to be marketed in the East Coast, especially in Sandakan, based on the modus operandi.

“Esscom also seized four units of Proton Exora and a Toyota Innova amounting to RM250,000 used by the suspects.’

He said all suspects and confiscated items were brought to Beluran police station for further action. The case will be investigated under Customs Act 1967.

Hazani stressed that Esscom would intensified its security and patrolling activity especially at areas suspected being used for criminal activity and illegal immigrants.
