Number of drug addicts in S’kan down 11pc last year

SANDAKAN: The number of drug addicts in the district registered with the National Anti-Drugs Agency (Nada) Sandakan declined 11 per cent in 2018 compared to previously.
In 2017, there were 234 drug addicts registered with Nada Sandakan and this declined to 210 in 2018, thus proving efforts to reduce drug addiction have been fruitful.

Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports, Arunarnsin Taib, said drugs not only caused severe effects to addicts such as decreased immunity but also caused social issues such as crimes.
“Therefore, parents and communities should play their roles in ensuring social issues and drug addiction can be monitored and eradicated at the grassroots level.
“Moreover, all leaders, local authority, enforcement, media practitioners and community need to cooperate in supporting any programme related to drug awareness,” he said at the “Recovery Day 2019” celebration at Sabah Hotel.
Also present were Assistant Director of Treatment and Rehabilitation Nada Sabah, Albert Tian, Chief Officer of Nada Sandakan, Aisyah Abdul Karim, Nada Sandakan staff and Under-surveillance Individuals (Orang Kena Pantau).
