Melalap gaining prominence: Minister
TENOM: Infrastructure Development Minister, Datuk Peter Anthony, said Melalap’s development continues to gain attention, especially after Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal announced the approval to make it a full district.

Shafie made the announcement when launching the Pekan Melalap ceremony in March, this year.

“Melalap’s popularity has grown to the point which qualifies it to be upgraded as a full district,” said the Melalap Assemblyman when officiating the district-level Kaamatan celebration held at the St Peter Church Open Hall in Kampung Pamilaan, here.

He said the new district office in Melalap is currently being implemented and the provision of offices and staff for the district will be managed by the Local Government and Housing Ministry in the near future.

He said many development plans have been made and some have already been implemented in the area since he became the people’s representative.

He pointed out that as a newly-formed government, he needed some time to implement the planned developments, adding that there is still much to be done.

In addition, as a full minister, he assured that attention will also be given to infrastructure development to every district across the State.

However, he said he will not forget about the needed development in his area, including Melalap and Kemabong.

Apart from infrastructure development, he said the people’s welfare in the district will also be kept, especially for students who will pursue higher education.

“The new government is working to solve the problem as a whole, such as the shortage of job opportunities, economic issues, reducing the people’s burden, the burden of students and more,” he said.

He said the people should, therefore, set aside political strife and focus on development.

With regard to the Melalap district-level Kaamatan celebration being held at Kampung Pamalaan instead of Dewan Seri Antanom in Pekan Tenom where it is usually held, he said the reason was to give opportunity to those living far from town to also experience the joy of Kaamatan.

He said it is his intention of giving everyone the opportunity to engage and experience the Kaamatan celebration.

He said, among others, parallel with the aim is the Sugandoi and State-level Unduk Ngadau which currently has 65 representatives from every division unlike before when participants only represent district level.

Also present were Tenom MP Noorita Sual, Kuamut Assemblyman Datuk Masiung Banah, Tenom District Officer-cum-Organising Chairman Sungkim Rumangun, among others.

The event also featured traditional performances, lucky draws and Unduk Ngadau competition.
