KOTA KINABALU: Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian’s injured right arm is almost healed as he continues his recovery process with slightly heavier training sessions at night during the fasting month at the Likas Stadium.
The 31-year-old national record holder in the men’s 110m hurdles fractured his arm when he hit the final hurdle and fell awkwardly during the Malaysia Open Grand Prix at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil late March.

He started light training barely two weeks after he had undergone surgery at Gleneagles Kota Kinabalu in April, and when met at the track on Wednesday evening, he reckoned his arm is almost 90 per cent healed and is getting stronger each day.
“My arm is getting stronger everyday and I would say it is 90 per cent okay now. The movement is fine, there is no pain and the stiffness is gone as well.
“I haven’t done any bench presses and starting blocks training as yet, but I feel it should be okay by now, as the doctor had said I should be able to do full training by June, which is only two weeks away,” he said.
He added that he is now preparing himself physically for his three-month training stint in Germany next month.

“Despite the fasting month, I still need to continue my training session alone from 7.30pm until 10 at night here at Likas Stadium.
“This is in preparation for my three-month training and competition stint in Leipzig, Germany next month which I will depart for on June 14 after the Raya celebrations with my family.

“I will be again training under Jay May who has been coaching me while I was there since 2011. This trip is sponsored by MSN Malaysia and I will be the sole Malaysian there. We will see how it goes and my first competition in Germany will be at the end of June.
“I hope everything is going to plan and I will be in my best shape at the Manila SEA Games as my target this year is to defend my SEA Games gold.”

Before the injury, Rayzam had already qualified for the biennial games with his third place finish at the 81st Singapore Open Track and Field Championship in March.
He clocked 13.82s to finish behind the Hong Kong’s duo of Ching Yeung Mui (13.77s) and Ching Wan Chan (13.77s), and the time posted was well below the qualifying time 14.10s.
