22 Tawau premises found tampering with meters

TAWAU: 22 business premises in the district were found to have tampered their usage of electricity causing an estimated loss of RM300,000.
This was revealed by Sabah Electricity Sdn. Bhd. (SESB) during their just concluded Ops Meter.

In a statement issued, acting Managing Director IR Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said they conducted checks on 208 premises in the district between May 14 to 20.
He warned those tampering meters in any way are liable to face Section 37 and 38 of the Electricity Supply Act 1980 if found guilty can face a hefty fine or jail, or both if convicted.
Nasser urged the public to avoid the risky endeavour due to the fact that it might cause injuries and death.
In worse cases it caused destruction to properties due to fire from such practises.

“To put oneself at risk is serious enough, but such tampering can cause power disruption to other electricity users as well”, he explained.
Nasser said Ops Meter was carried out statewide in major towns and city since 2017 until 2019.

A total of 4,757 premises were checked yielding 1,115 cases amounting to an estimated losses of around RM4.5 million.
Touching on the method of tampering, Nasser said only people with good understanding on how electricity works know how to manipulate the current system placed by them, while at the same time not denying that such knowledge comes from within, he said in replying to a question.
