16 S’kan bazaar stall operators compounded

SANDAKAN: Sixteen bazaar stall operators here were compounded by the Sandakan Health Department for various offences under the Food Hygiene Regulations 2009.
Sandakan Health Officer Dr Johari Awang Besar said that so far during the fasting month, 273 food stalls and 551 food handlers here have been inspected.

“The enforcement of “Ops Bazar Ramadan” this year received good collaboration from the local authorities. The operation started from 2pm until 5pm.
“The bazaars that have been inspected were Sandakan Town, Fajar Mile 7, Sibuga Jaya Mile 8, Flat MPS Karamunting/Nam Tung, Taman Mawar, Giant Mile 6, Sejati Walk Mile 7, and Indah Jaya.
“Based on the enforcement, 11 food samplings have been taken for microbiology analysis and it is still pending for the results. At the same time, we have issued compound notices to 16 stall operators which carries fine that vary between RM100 and RM1,000, based on the type of offences.
“The Sandakan Health Office issued two compound notices for not complying with the requirements to the general duties of premises owner, four compound notices related to food handlers training while 10 notices for failure of food handlers to comply with suitable attire,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Johari advised the public to choose premises that sell clean and safe food before buying to prevent from food poisoning, cholera and typhoid, among others.
He said that stern action will be imposed on food operators who fail to protect and ensure safety of food they display.
