SEMPORNA: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal is saddened that certain political groups are using the Ramadan month to spread lies against the Warisan-led Sabah Government.

He said these groups were spreading slander against the Sabah Government and Warisan by persistently claiming that the Government was giving out identity cards to illegal immigrants.

“Don’t spread lies to score political points during this month. No point fasting when our actions don’t tally. Why cause hatred among mankind by spreading fake news on social media?” he said during a breaking of fast event at his home base here.

Shafie was apparently referring to the latest lie being spread in the social media where groups of foreigners were seen allegedly applying for Malaysian identity cards through so-called government documents that were imprinted with the Warisan logo.

Deputy Home Minister Datuk Azis Jamman had blamed syndicates for using Warisan logo to sell application forms for identity cards to unsuspecting illegal immigrants.

He denied the party was ever involved, saying no political party would place its logo on government forms.

The National Registration Department (NRD) had on Thursday also denied involvement in the matter.

It said in a statement that several photos of the forms related to identity card registration were not official documents issued and used by the department for registration purposes.

Parti Warisan Sabah Secretary-General Loretto Padua, who also denied that the party was involved in an apparent citizenship drive using Warisan logo in Lahad Datu, questioned why the party had to take the blame.

He argued that if there were such an exercise by his party, its other coalition parties would have already made noise.

Warisan has lodged a police report over the matter and did not discount the possibility of it being the work of certain opposition parties, which continued to harp on the baseless claim that Warisan was actively trying to turn foreigners into Malaysians.

Shafie also stressed and reiterated that he did not have the authority to issue identity cards, as it is constitutionally an authority of the Federal Government.

As Chief Minister for all Sabahans, he assured development in all parts of Sabah has and is being planned, and it is only a matter of time before being implemented.

He urged the politicking to stop and for everyone to work for the betterment of Sabah.

Some 2,000 people attended the event at the Ar-Rahman Mosque, which saw Shafie giving Raya aid to hundreds of people, including the poor and school children.

Meanwhile, Sabah PKR demanded a full investigation into the report on the sale of application forms, which have Parti Warisan Sabah logo, for identity cards to illegal immigrants.

Its Vice Chairman Kenny Chua said the authorities must not leave any stone unturned in their investigation and bring the culprits to justice.

“This is absolutely shocking. PKR is viewing the matter very seriously. We demand a full investigation,” he said.

Chua, who is also Assistant Finance Minister, described the people behind such act as traitors and posed a serious threat to the sovereignty of the State.

“It doesn’t matter whether the culprits are from any political party, they must be brought to justice,” he said, adding the culprits had tarnished the image of Warisan and its coalition partners PKR, DAP and Upko.
