DBKK to check Kolombong parking monopoly
City Hall (DBKK) staff will check on the goings-on at a Kolombong commercial centre following a complaint that some of the parking lots were being monopolised by proprietors there.

NOEL of Penampang decried the inconsiderate actions of shop lot owners who blocked off the parking lots in front their units using plastic chairs, fire hydrants and wooden crates.

“I cannot understand why drivers have to go round and round looking for parking when spaces available for this purpose have been blocked by these items,” he said.

On a recent Saturday, he claimed a traffic cone was placed in a parking bay for a shop there. He said he circled the centre three times before he finally managed to find an empty parking lot.

“When I alighted from my car, I immediately made my way to the shop and asked the staff why they had blocked the parking bay,” he said.

“I got into an argument with the worker when he informed me that they were expecting a customer to bring his car to be repaired at the shop.” Noel hoped City Hall would intervene to prevent the public parking lots around the centre from being misused.

“Many motorists have to park illegally in order to go to the shops there because of the selfish actions of shopkeepers.

“These drivers risk being served with a RM30 compound for doing this. City Hall should consider doing the same to proprietors who insist on blocking off the parking bays in the town.

“After all, it is not as if these shopkeepers have to pay a parking fee for occupying these spaces.”

A City Hall spokesman said the agency would have to verify the motorist’s claims.

He said City Hall would have to determine if the road and parking bays outside belonged to the agency.

“If this is so then any member of the public can make use of these lots to park their vehicle,” he said.

“Our officers will make this clear to the operator and instruct him/her to refrain from ‘reserving’ these bays for his/her customers.”

He said the shopkeeper would be warned not to block off any of the parking bays by placing chairs, or other objects, in these spaces. (SS)
