Make use of the skills classes, Filipinos told
KOTA KINABALU: Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia, Charles Jose, thanked both the Philippines Overseas Labour Office (Polo) and Migrant Workers and Other Filipinos Resources Centre (MWOFRC) for continuously providing shelter and capacity building programmes to fellow countrymen in Malaysia.

He also congratulated the men and women of the Overseas Worker Welfare Administration (OWWA) for their excellent work in supporting OFWs.

Disclosing this during the OWWA 37th Anniversary in Kuala Lumpur recently, Jose said the MWOFRC skills training centre is presently offering 31 courses with 850 students.

“These classes cover basic nursing home care, computer studies (accounting for non-accountants, spreadsheets, Adobe Photoshop and basic publishing), cooking (baking/cake decoration), Asian and International cuisine, cosmetology, reflexology, Bahasa Melayu, hair culture, dressmaking, Kemp, Zumba and automotive,” he said.

Jose also stressed that the courses are designed to teach or upgrade the skills of OFWs while working in Malaysia to enable them to advance in their respective professions.

At the same time, he said it is aimed to provide OFWs with alternative livelihood options for their eventual return to the Philippines.

In his inspirational message delivered during the double celebrations, the Ambassador also highlighted the importance of the Filipino diaspora in the economic development of the Philippines.

“Your remittances serve as one of the key drivers of economic growth of our country, which contribute to the resilience of our economy despite global crisis and shocks.

“Your remittances drive consumption spending, thereby creating local demand for businesses to supply with goods and services,” Jose said, adding, “this in turn generates employment”.

He also presented certificates of recognition to MWOFRC volunteers as well as administered the oaths of office to the MWOFRC Council of leaders and its respective class presidents during the event.
