Clash between two Ranau groups leaves one injured
RANAU: A clash between two groups of people at the corridor of a shop lot near the vegetable market in town here left one man slightly injured, Sunday.

Several suspects were also detained following the 1pm incident believed involving locals and Filipinos, which went viral on the social media.

Confirming the incident, Ranau Police Chief DSP Mohd Shahrul Abdul Wahab (pic)  urged the public to remain calm and refrain from making speculations.

“The public are advised not to viral any incident, especially when there is only a bunch of facts from various sources, which ultimately will provide an incorrect translation of the incident.

“It is better to call the police immediately instead of turning to the social media which will only exacerbate the situation,” he said. He said the cause of the incident was not as what was circulated through WhatsApp and Facebook.

“There was a misunderstanding between several quarters in Ranau town. Police units were deployed to the locations involved and follow-up actions were taken.

“Among the measures taken are arrests (of individuals to assist in investigation) and confiscation (of related items). “Other than that, there is little that we could reveal until a thorough investigation is carried out. We hope everyone will keep calm,” he said.

Shahrul said the injured victim was sent to the Ranau Hospital for treatment.

Based on postings on the social media, a local man was beaten up by a group of Filipinos and this led to retaliation from a group of locals, believed to be acquaintances of the victim.

The Filipinos involved were said to be those peddling illegal cigarettes around the Ranau town area, while the local victim was said to be a Dusun from Kg Badukan Ranau.

A group of people was also seen carrying sharp objects such as sickle and axe in a spiteful manner, although it was not confirmed which group was carrying the alleged weapons.
