Road finally for Ranau villagers
RANAU: Villagers in Kg Penulangon Ranau, situated in a far flung area with limited road access had reason to smile when Ranau MP Jonathan Yassin approved a RM80,000 allocation for the village recently.

Jonathan, who is also Malaysian Cocoa Board Chairman, announced the allocation during the St Joseph Chapel Penulangon Kaamatan Festival celebration that was held in the village.

In his speech, he said the proposal to the relevant authority regarding road problem in the area has been completed and that he hoped the villagers will continue to be patient for it.

“Obviously, the road to this village is the main problem of the people here. Furthermore, the damaged bridge that has yet to be repaired until now is re extremely disturbing.

“We are very concerned about the hardship the people here are facing. We know that some of them have to carry a coffin for about seven kilometres (to the cemetery) due to lack of proper road here.

“The road repair is already in the pipeline but there are many things to be done before construction begins. One of them is permission from the FMU because some of the affected areas are within the FMU,” he explained.

On the bridge, Jonathan said that the budget for it and the road is being determined by the PWD and that he hoped there would be a positive decision.

“Meanwhile, we have allocated RM50,000 to build a road for motorcycles and RM20,000 to assist the motorcyclists. We understand that since cars are not accessible here, motorcycles play a vital role in the daily livelihood of the people.

“In addition, the RM10,000 is for the Catholic Church Women’s Association. As for the solar or mini-hydro for electricity generation, it is being studied as to its costs,” he said.

At the event, he presented assistance to 15 senior citizens including for the disabled and single mothers.

Prior to this, Jonathan once remarked that the new government under Pakatan Harapan (PH) will give attention to the improvement of basic needs of the people here that have been neglected by the previous Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

“This includes village roads. And one road in particular is the road to Kg Penulangon.

“This has long been raised during the time when we were still in the opposition but the former Government failed to pay attention to it.

“We received information that the bridge that was supposed to be built for the convenience of villagers in Penulangon has been moved elsewhere in the past. This is not good for the people,” he said.

Jonathan said that under the PH Government, “we are working to ensure that this will be taken seriously so that bridges and roads are built,” he said.
