Five held over the Ranau clash
RANAU: Five people have been arrested following the 12.15pm clash between two groups in town on Sunday which left a local man injured.Ranau Police Chief DSP Mohd Shahrul Datuk Abdul Wahab (pic) also said talk that locals here are preparing to take revenge against foreigners over the incident was a rumour.

“There are those out there who want to act as though they are above the law. Let this be a warning that if there is a plan to take the law into their own hands, our side will take the necessary action,” he said.

Shahrul advised the public not to “viral” any incident which could worsen the situation. Those with information on the case are urged to contact the nearest police station. “It is better to call the police immediately or come to the nearest police station to assist in the investigation,” he said.

Shahrul said the five were detained to facilitate investigations under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt using dangerous weapons or means.

Commenting on the incident, he said 28-year-old Stanley Gisin was standing in front of a shop when a group of men rushed out from a car and began attacking several others nearby.

“The victim ran but was caught up by two of the assailants who rained blows with pipes causing a bloody wound on the back of his head which received six stitches,” he said.

It was earlier reported that the clash was believed to involve locals and Filipinos due to a misunderstanding. The Filipinos involved were said to be peddling illegal cigarettes around the Ranau town area, while the local victim was said to be a Dusun from Kg Badukan, Ranau.
