PENAMPANG: The construction of a bridge for the Pan Borneo highway downstream of Monsopiad Cultural Village has been blamed for the Moyog river bursting its banks after heavy rain over the weekend and causing distress to folks here.

Temporary earthworks for piling platform filled half the river’s width and was supposed to be only for three months but has extended to the rainy season.

It was also abandoned during the long holiday period, claim villagers.

According to community leaders of Kampung Kuai Kandazon who had met with engineers for the project on site, the earthworks would be removed if flooding occurs.

However in the weekends, there is hardly any machinery or worker on site. The same was seen on the working day of Monday.

The flood waters widened the river by causing a massive erosion on the left bank.

The sharp turn of the river flow can still contribute to higher flood levels, they observed.

“The river bank’s collapse is very close to the foundation works for this bridge,” they said.

Meanwhile, land owners affected by the project had yet to receive their compensation from the Land and Survey Office despite having signed papers accepting the offers made by the department more than three months ago. Pic shows river flow diverted by the earthwork platform
