TAWAU: Kelab Tennis Remaja Tawau (KTRT) called on the State Government to create extra tennis courts in the district and expand the sport so it is enjoyed by all ages.

Club President Karunagaren T. Sambandam said tennis has good future and it has market. It is important to have good infrastructure in order to generate good tennis players.

KTRT is a small club in Tawau and parental support is necessary for it to move forward. He believed KTRT is doing much better than other tennis clubs in Sabah and will become a famous club one day with many national players.

“Tennis teaches not only sports but other values like punctuality, responsibility, teamwork, determination as well as the most importantly how to balance sports and education,” he said at a junior Tennis Clinic  held at Tawau Sports Complex recently.

Club secretary, Dr Pauline Vairappan  disclosed that KTRT, a non-profit club, had been registered with the Youths and Sports Ministry in July 2017.

“Although we are small in a small town we aim big. We will have to struggle hard  in producing more good tennis players for the state-level games,” she said.

Currently, they have hired two coaches from Philippines, who are Arjohn Dela Cruz and Carlos Wilson Oblea to train the players of the club.

A visiting coach for this tennis clinic (May 24-June 1) was Kenny Bun from Cambodia. He was trained in France with one of the biggest club-Tennis Club Metz. He had obtained two bronze medals in Sea Games in 2011 and 2015, as well as the Davis Cup Player for seven years (2012-2019).

Kenny, who was also the champion for the Malaysia National Circuit in 2017 and ranked 1080 in the Association of Tennis Professionals- ATP (single).

Earlier, the club invited a coach Jenny Marcos from USA.
