TAWAU: The State is emerging as an important crab exporter with Tawau alone exporting up to six tonnes of crabs to China every month according to Borneo Aqua Harvest Berhad, (CEO) Datuk Lo Fui Ming.

The State Government should actively develop the agricultural and fishery industry to create unlimited potential and market opportunities,” said Lo.

He said, many players initially doubted the potential of the industry. Each tonne to China cost as high as RM70,000 to RM100,000.

Indeed, Sabah is a “home for crabs” with excellent geographical environment for crab breeding, he said.

He was pleased that State Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Junz Wong shared experience and technology from abroad to assist the development of the agriculture and fisheries industry in Malaysia, Sabah, in particular.

Crab breeding is currently a start-up industry in Sabah and with the new government’s effort, a new crab breeding base has been built in Menumbok, Pitas, Sandakan, Semporna and Tawau to carry out systematic and scientific research.

Lo said the vision of a crab breeding industry would improve the livelihood of residents living nearby in the coastal waters.

According to him, today’s crab market is worth in price, which tend to become a large-scale industrial development, and to be developed into a small or family fishery project.

Lo is willing to offer advice dedication to those who are interested in participating in this crab breeding program. He also urged all fishery industrial players to protect the young crabs from proper breeding.
